Daring to Challenge the Status Quo: A Journey of Courage, Growth, and Transformation

Let me begin with a story close to my heart, my grandmother’s story. She passed down a powerful piece of wisdom: never settle for the stereotypes, the majority, or the comfort of the familiar. Her life was a testament to courage, resilience, and breaking barriers.

Imagine her starting her journey in a time when women’s choices were severely limited. She faced an arranged marriage and left her homeland to forge a new life in a distant land. With unwavering strength, she built her future, setting boundaries and refusing to be confined by her circumstances. For over forty years, she supported her family alone after her spouse passed, enduring loss, hardship, and hope. Her story is a compelling reminder that challenging the status quo often requires extraordinary courage, but it opens the door to extraordinary possibilities.

What if you dared to challenge your own status quo?

Challenging the norm isn’t about reckless rebellion; it’s about having the courage to be unique, to face fears that hold you back, and to open doors to new opportunities. When you step outside of your comfort zone, you gain invaluable lessons, deepen your self-awareness, and discover limits you never knew you had, limits that, once broken, allow you to grow and evolve.

This process is about creating something bigger than yourself, something that benefits not only you but the collective. It’s about innovation, progress, and transformation. It’s about letting go of past limitations and stepping into a future filled with possibilities you couldn’t imagine before.

Just like my grandmother’s unpredictable journey across oceans and continents, your journey may be full of surprises. Her courage, perseverance, and hope created a legacy that continues to inspire, proving that challenging the status quo can change lives for generations.

Personal and Professional Challenges

Here are some personal and professional challenges I’ve embraced, challenges that pushed me beyond my perceived limits:

Personal Challenge #1 – Fear: Step into big marital roles as step-mother and step-grandmother without experience

  • Action: Raised and maintained a household of 7, not biologically my own
  • Result: Gained resilience, patience, and a new perspective on family.

Personal Challenge #2 – Fear: Being uncoordinated and avoiding the dance floor

  • Action: Took ballroom dance lessons
  • Result: Found joy in movement and connection.

Personal Challenge #3– Fear: Being a non-swimmer and avoiding the ocean

  • Action: Certified in scuba diving
  • Result: Discovered a whole new world beneath the waves.

Personal Challenge #4 – Fear: Mortality and avoiding all high-risk activities

  • Action: Did tandem skydiving
  • Result: Embrace the risk of growth and perspective

Personal Challenge #5 – Fear: Not having a physical home or waiting till retirement to travel

  • Action: Lived a nomadic life, traveled the world with just a backpack and a carry-on luggage
  • Result: Gained reconnections, relationships, mindfulness intentions, and cultural perspectives

Professional Challenge #1 – Presumption: Executives are unreachable, and you are not important enough to speak or be heard by them

  • Action: Asked a vice president to mentor me
  • Result: Gained invaluable connection, perspective, and insights

Professional Challenge #2 – Presumption: Limited to my job description

  • Action: Took on multiple roles simultaneously – project engineer, product owner, systems engineer, tester, trainer, and commission engineer
  • Result: Expanded invaluable skills and business, organizational, and technical perspectives

Professional Challenge #3 – Presumption: Stay within the departmental boundaries/constraints

  • Action: Be curious about other departmental work and how it ties in with your job and department
  • Result: Broke silos, connected and integrated with multiple departments and people, working relationships to create stronger, more innovative solutions

Professional Challenge #4 – Presumption: Customer is always right and pleasing every request

  • Action: Set boundaries and confidently speak out in front of the customer in a rational manner
  • Result: Gained respect and trust from both colleagues and customers

Professional Challenge #5 – Presumption: One-directional and one-sided way of contribution and delivery of project deliverables, while the customer receives and approves.

  • Action: Co-create solutions with the customer
  • Result: Gained gratitude, appreciation, and respect from the customer by buying dinner for me in front of the prime contractor

Lessons Learned

My ongoing journey of challenging and breaking the status quo has continually opened new paths and possibilities. Interestingly, one thing I initially thought I would avoid was networking. I believed it was purely transactional. Over time, I learned to reframe it as making genuine connections, being curious about others, recognizing their gifts and strengths, and appreciating their perspectives. Approached this way, networking became not only more meaningful but also more enjoyable. It’s a reminder that life is richer when we connect authentically, without expectations.

The status quo is often plain vanilla: predictable and safe. Challenging it is about creating rich, awe-inspiring flavors. It’s about leveraging our diversity, our experiences, knowledge, culture, and upbringing, and sharing them to build stronger, more innovative communities. Life is too short to remain stuck in routines dictated by societal and cultural norms simply to fit in. True growth happens when we dare to break free and forge new paths.

In the workplace, everyone from executives and managers to clients and colleagues is human. It’s okay not to know everything or to be wrong sometimes. We all have gaps, blind spots, strengths, and traumas. The beauty of our humanity is that we can come together, complement each other’s skills, and collaborate to innovate, solve problems, and create. Challenging the status quo isn’t just about individual growth; it’s about inspiring others and leading the way into a brighter future.

The world is constantly evolving. With the rise of artificial intelligence and rapid societal change, the urgency to innovate and stay ahead has never been greater. Each step I take is driven by a desire to grow, challenge assumptions, and unlock new possibilities, because true progress begins with the courage to challenge the norm.

Final Reflection

So, I ask you:

  • What are you holding back from creating or becoming?
  • What might you regret not trying?
  • How can you co-create and co-solve with others to reach the next level?
  • What brave steps can you take today to explore the unknown?

The world is waiting for what only you can bring. Are you ready to lead the way?
