About Sheila Yam

Leadership & Team Coach | Facilitator | Consultant

Sheila is a leadership and team coach with over 20 years in Engineering, from individual contributor to team lead. She has led cross-functional and multi-cultural teams across multi-sites in domestic and international projects in the Defense & Commercial Vehicles, Nuclear, and Rail technology industries.

She has experience working with individuals and teams focusing on a growth mindset and instilling a collaborative environment. Sheila has the unique ability to connect with people, value their strengths, and bring people together.

Sheila leverages her background in engineering (problem-solving & critical thinking), project management (leadership & planning), and people management (communication & active listening) to understand each individual’s contribution to the team and the project that makes the company successful. 

My Qualifications

With a proven track record in leading high-performing, diverse teams across remote, hybrid, and in-person settings, I bring deep experience in navigating change. 

  • 10 years in Rail Transportation Industry as an Engineer (Requirements, Lab/Field Tester), Team Lead, Work Package Lead, Project Engineer, Technical Project Manager for both domestic and international projects
  • 5 years in Nuclear Power Industry on Core Automation product as an Integration Engineer, Lead and Project Manager
  • 5 years in Defense Industry on Military & Commercial Vehicles as a Systems Engineer (Requirements, Testing) and Product Support  
  • Experience in leading teams without direct reports and building high-performing teams
  • Experience in collaboration with multicultural, multigenerational, multidiscipline workforce
  • Experience with remote/hybrid/co-located work environment
  • Experience with waterfall/V-cycle, iterative, agile development lifecycles
  • Masters of Business Administration in Market Development
  • Masters of Science in Mechanical Engineering
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering

Sheila enjoys and is curious about people and their dynamics.

She focuses on building teams in parallel to ensure they have the necessary encouragement and resources to do their jobs. She believes an individual contributor or leader in a team at a corporate workplace can feel that they have been accepted into a community or a second family outside of the home so that the team feels accomplished collectively and leverages each other’s strengths to tackle any task and obstacle and still be there for each other in their struggles.

Beyond her professional expertise, Sheila has traveled the world full-time for over two years after becoming an empty nester and downsizing to embrace minimalism. She loves exploring new sights, meeting new people, learning about different cultures, experiencing new activities, and tasting new foods in locations both within the United States and abroad.
