The Allure of Travel: Dreaming Beyond Borders

Many of us dream of travel that sparks excitement. Whether it’s a retirement goal, a much-needed break from the daily grind, or the pure thrill of discovery, we imagine ourselves wandering through new sights, immersing in vibrant cultures, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. It all sounds glamorous, inspiring, almost magical, until we step into the reality of it.

Beginning the Journey: Embracing the Unknown

My adventure started when I decided to embrace minimalism: downsizing my possessions, simplifying my life, and living out of suitcases. I didn’t do it alone; I began this chapter with my then-partner, who had just retired, turning us into full-time, slow travelers. Unlike the rushed tourists rushing from one place to another, we chose to linger, staying in each place for more than two weeks (nearly three months per country). No home to return to, just a new destination to explore. Our mission? To discover continents we’d rarely visited because of travel time, distance, and cost. We kicked off in Oceania and Asia, eager to see what the world had to offer.

First Impressions and Personal Growth

Those first six months were nothing short of awe-inspiring. Every day brought a new wonder: amazing sights, culture, and experiences I could never have imagined. I felt joy, a happiness I hadn’t fully known before. I believed I had finally caught the dream many chase, and peaceful moments with my partner after a turbulent family history. I thought I was living the life I’d longed for.

A Life-Changing Encounter in Bali

Seven months into my journey, we arrived in Bali, Indonesia, a place famously depicted in the 2010 film Eat Pray Love (which I hadn’t read or watched until fall 2024). Bali is a paradise, famous for honeymooners and those seeking a fresh start. From the outside, it looks like the ultimate escape: perfect weather, delicious food, friendly locals, breathtaking scenery, and an affordable cost of living.

Lessons from a Balinese Guide

During our stay, I met Komang, the owner of the Ubud Airbnb where we stayed, and his family. His wife’s name was also Komang. He became our guide for a day, taking us to distant sights and sharing stories from his life. I learned that in Balinese culture, the name “Komang” is given to the third-born child, an example of how names reflect birth order, making them easier to remember (something I’ve always struggled with).

Reflections on Success and Fulfillment: A Turning Point

That moment stayed with me, sparking a deep inner reflection. Coming from one of the most powerful and wealthiest countries in the world and raised with Asian cultural values, I’ve been conditioned to believe that success and happiness come from ambition of chasing more: more achievements, more possessions, more recognition. It’s a narrative woven into our history: our Declaration of Independence proclaims the “Pursuit of Happiness.” But I started questioning: Are we actually chasing the right things?

Rethinking Ambition

A New Path of Purpose

Over the next six months, my inner voice grew louder. I craved more than fleeting encounters; I longed for genuine connection, meaningful conversations, and a sense of belonging. I questioned the purpose of my life: Was it just about having fun? Or was there something more I could contribute to humanity? I wanted both.

This awakening led me to a new my path, to become a professional coach dedicated to making a positive difference, no matter how small. In 2024, I returned to the U.S. to reconnect with loved ones and made the decision to resettle in 2025. I built a home, earned my coaching certification, launched my business, and committed to a life of growth, learning, and connection. Traveling remained a vital part of my life, and I plan to explore 4-5 times a year, always seeking new perspectives and meaningful experiences.
